Course Descriptions

Theology 1 - Bible History: Old Testament - year - 9
This course is designed to provide an introductory study of theology that will incorporate the ninth grade student into the Chaminade-Madonna community. The first semester is a survey of basic aspects of Christian teaching and revelation. The course begins by examining the development of the person intellectually, physically, morally, sexually, and psychologically and then proceeds to revelation and religious experience to provide a language for speaking about God. The second semester is devoted to how God has been revealed in the Old Testament and the relationship between God and the people of Israel.

Theology 2 -Bible History: New Testament - year - 10
The second year builds upon the foundation established in the previous year beginning with how God has been revealed in the person of Jesus the Christ and in the New Testament. Students will study how the New Testament arose from the early church's experience of Jesus as the Risen Lord. The second half of the year is devoted to the study of the sacraments from their New Testament origins to current church teaching and theology.

Theology 3 - Christian Ethics and Social Justice - year - 11
The first semester is concerned with Christian morality and ethics. The subject matter presents Catholic Christian values and a method of moral discernment that will provide the student with the necessary knowledge and tools to become the person God intended. The second semester of this course explores the Christian call to work for issues of justice and peace. Based upon the Christ of the scriptures, social justice will be studied both ideologically and practically as service to neighbor. These elements are essential in the formation of adult Christian values.

Honors Theology 3 – Christian Ethics and Social Justice – year – 11
Prerequisite: A 3.5 or better grade point average (GPA) and a theology teacher recommendation.
The first semester is concerned with Christian morality and ethics. The subject matter presents Catholic Christian values and a method of moral discernment that will provide the student with necessary knowledge and tools to become the person God intended. The second semester of this course explores the Christian call to work for issues of justice and peace. Based upon the Christ of the scriptures, social justice will be studied both ideologically and practically as service to neighbor. These elements are essential in the formation of adult Christian values. Students enrolled in this course will be expected to evaluate case studies critically in the first semester and put to practice the social teaching of the Church through the use of a variety of activities and projects in the second semester. Students will be expected to engage the material presented in both semesters through additional reading and writing both in and outside of the constraints of class time.

Theology 4 - Christian Commitment and Church History - year - 12
One semester of this course focuses upon the types of Christian commitment (marriage, orders, vowed life), on the living out of a mature and appropriate Christian sexuality, and on the dynamics of healthy relational living as key issues in the life of an adult Christian. The other semester emphasizes the study of the history of the Roman Catholic Church from its New Testament foundation to the post-Vatican II era.

Theology 4 – Christian Commitment and World Religions – year – 12
One semester of this course focuses upon the types of Christian commitment (marriage, orders, vowed life), on the living out of a mature and appropriate Christian sexuality, and on the dynamics of healthy relational living as key issues in the life of an adult Christian. The other semester emphasizes the study of other world religions, including Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism.

Honors Theology 4 - Pastoral Ministry and Faith and the Modern World - year - 12
Prerequisite: A 3.5or better grade point average (GPA) and a theology teacher recommendation.
One semester of this course will focus on and introduction to pastoral ministry in the Roman Catholic Church, including the role of the laity, non-Eucharistic liturgies, group facilitation and preaching skills, and pastoral care and counseling. The other semester will focus on the theme of faith and encourage students through epistemology, apologetics, and revelation to personally choose faith in Jesus Christ.

Honors Latin and the Roman Catholic Church – year – 11 – 12
Prerequisite: A 3.5 or better grade point average (GPA).
This elective course will study the classical language, Latin. Emphasis will be placed on grammar and vocabulary. The particular relationship of Latin to Roman culture and the Roman Catholic Church (as one of its two official languages) will also be emphasized.
