Course Descriptions

Art

Art Appreciation - semester - 10 - 12
This is an introductory course incorporating the nature, vocabulary and use of the different media of art. Students will learn art history through a variety of two-dimensional projects with emphasis on drawing and painting. Students will learn the foundations of the elements and principles of art, focusing on the properties of color and perspective. Open to those students needing to meet the Fine Arts requirement.

Visual Arts 1 & 2 - year each - 11 - 12
Prerequisite: Art Appreciation or Instructor's permission
This is an intermediate course. In the first semester, the students will study theory and application of basic drawing and painting materials, techniques and concepts and vocabulary, focusing on two- dimensional projects. Art history will be incorporated into this course in order to present the student with a more thorough understanding of artists and their styles, periods in time, and influences on society. During second semester, the students will study color, design and graphics, focusing on the interaction and relativity of color. Students will explore two- and three-dimensional study of form, principles of organization, and the elements of design fundamental for creative work in visual arts. Students will learn about visual perception and the creative process, along with its tools and techniques.

AP Studio Art: Advanced Drawing & Painting - year - 12
Prerequisite: Visual Arts 1 or Instructor's permission
This is an advanced visual arts course intended for students who wish to pursue serious studies in the arts. It requires highly motivated students who have had previous successful experience in art courses and who are willing to devote considerable time and effort to the study of the different styles, techniques and media of art and to their own development of higher level skills. Students will complete an impressive portfolio of art work for consideration by the College Board.

Ceramics I & II - semester each - 11 - 12
Prerequisite: Art Appreciation or Instructor's permission
Ceramics is an introductory course in which students will be exposed to the medium of clay, its properties, vocabulary, and design possibilities. Students are expected to complete the course with a thorough understanding of hand building techniques, clay types, textural applications, glazing and firing techniques in the kiln. Sculpture and wheel throwing are also introduced in the second part of the semester.

Music

Music Appreciation - semester - 9 - 12
Students will learn about the relationship between music and society in different time periods. This will be done through listening, discussion, as well as learning the basics of music. This course is designed for the student who has a genuine interest in music, but doesn't necessarily want to learn how to perform on an instrument. This course will also prepare students for college music appreciation courses which are required by many universities.

Beginning Band - year - 9 - 11
This course provides instruction in the fundamentals of wind performance. Emphasis is placed on tone quality, intonation, phrasing, breathing, technique, reading, listening, and goal setting. This is a preparatory class for entrance into Symphonic Band and is designed for students with little to no musical knowledge or experience. Instruments offered are: flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, mallet percussion and timpani. Students will be required to participate in events outside of the normal school day.

Symphonic Band 1 - 4 - year - 9 - 12
Prerequisite: Consent of the music instructor
In this course, students will perform music of various styles. Emphasis will be placed on personal musical growth, including tone quality, balance, blend, intonation, phrasing, breathing, technique, musicality, style, scales, reading, listening, and goal setting. Students will perform at concerts, school events, and performances throughout the community. Students will be required to participate in events outside of the normal school day.

Jazz Ensemble 1 – 3 – year – 10 – 12
Prerequisite: Consent of the music instructor
This course is designed to allow experienced musicians to perform music in the jazz idiom. Emphasis will be placed on rock, swing, and Latin styles. Instrumentation includes all wind instruments, drum set, percussion, piano, guitar, and electric bass.

Concert Choir 1 - 4 – year – 9 – 12
Concert Choir is a performing group. Concepts such as breath support, intonation, music reading, singing in parts, and diction will be taught. Students will be performing music in department concerts and will also perform for school functions, including all liturgies. Emphasis will be placed on personal musical growth and a study of music history. Students are required to participate in weekly practices after school and approximately five out-of-school performances.

Percussion Techniques 1 – 4 - year - 9 - 12
Prerequisite: Consent of the music instructor
In this course, students will perform with the Symphonic Band and the Drum Line. Students will perform music of various styles. Emphasis will be placed on personal musical growth, including rudiments, balance, blend, intonation, phrasing, technique, musicality, style, scales, reading, listening, and goal setting. Students will perform at concerts, school events, and performances throughout the community. Students will be required to participate in events outside of the normal school day.

Theatre and Media Arts

Drama & Theatre - semester - 9 - 12
This introductory course provides in-depth experiences in the study and practice of theatrical arts and related literature. Course work includes the study of theatre history from Ancient Greece to Broadway through the analysis of several period plays. Performance work will include an introduction to the fundamentals of acting through monologues, scene work, character and play analysis, vocal and movement training, and competitive improvisation. An introduction to play production will include hands-on education in scenery construction, costuming, make-up, and lighting and sound design. Attendance of the mainstage production will be required as part of the curriculum.

Advanced Drama - year - 10 - 12
Prerequisite: Instructor permission
This advanced course is intended for the serious theatre student. Emphasis is placed on career exploration and portfolio development. Course work includes the theory and criticism of the stage from antiquity through modern theatre, including literary analysis and research of each of the major periods of theatrical history. Study includes major playwrights and theatrical figures throughout history. Projects include main stage productions, competition quality monologues, duet scenes, ensembles, vocal selections, pantomimes, one-acts, and improvisational selections. A project in college planning as it relates to theatre is included. Extracurricular work is required.

Television Production I - year - 10 - 12
Prerequisete: Instructor Permission.
This course is designed to allow the student to explore the medium of television. The history of television will be covered to give a perspective on the impact that television has made on our lives. The student will then learn the production elements of TV using technical vocabulary, operating video equipment, and writing copy for video pieces produced in class. The scope of this course could also include students on special assignments such as covering sporting events, the performing arts, and school functions. The course is designed for a full year but may be taken by semester with the instructor's approval for one-half credit.

Television Production II - year - 11 - 12
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Television Production I
Students successfully completing Television Production I may take this course. These students will be assigned special projects designed to enhance the skills that they learned in Television Production I.

Advanced Television Production - year - 12
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Television Production II
Students will be assigned advanced projects in filming and editing.

Cinematography - semester - 11 - 12
This course will survey a variety of films. A brief history of film will introduce the student to the evolution of filmmaking and its place in society. The films chosen for analysis may be of a particular genre, a body of work by a particular director or actor, possess a particular theme or survey many different subjects and styles. The student will be asked to analyze and critique each film in both oral and written expression. Students will develop their skills of critiquing and forming opinions on the films to be screened.

Beginning Dance - semester - 10 - 12
This course is designed to give beginning dance students a basic history of dance as well as technique and dance movements in all mediums. All students will be required to perform in at least one main stage production.

Intermediate Dance - semester - 11 - 12
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Beginning Dance and permission of the instructor
This course will give intermediate dance students a continuing knowledge of dance. Students will learn dance combinations and dances at the intermediate level. All students will be required to perform in at least one main stage production.

Dance Choreography - semester - 12 (For those who have taken Intermediate Dance)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Intermediate Dance and permission of the instructor
Students would learn to read, write, and create choreography in numerous dance mediums, such as: jazz, tap, modern, and ethnic. Curriculum includes music time signatures and rhythm, such as 4/4, 2/4, 3/8. Students will be evaluated on written and practical weekly tests, as well as finial dance pieces (both written and performed) by individual and groups. Students will purchase a notebook and shoes; they will wear their C-M approved dance clothes. All students will be required to perform in at least one main stage production.
